In a letter to the editor, Sue Davies expressed her desire for primaries to be open.
In fact, they already are in New Jersey. Any registered voter can declare themselves unaffiliated, then they can declare a party affiliation at their polling location on primary day and vote in that primary election.
Immediately thereafter, they can file another voter registration form declaring themselves unaffiliated again.
Primaries are open to all voters; they just have to register as unaffiliated to be able to choose a party on primary day, which is the only day you have to affiliate with a party to vote.
I don’t want your readers to think that primaries are closed in any way. It is not true. They are open to all registered voters.
Another issue is the absurd logic that went into the removal of the public gazebo on the Newton Square.
I suppose now, if the Newton Police Department gets too many calls to a local playground, the community should expect the likes of county commissioners (William) Hayden and (Chris) Carney to have county workers rip out the playground.
If there are too many calls to local basketball courts, will they remove the hoops? Where does this end?
I can see this kind of obtuse thinking coming from Commissioner Hayden, but Carney really ought to be ashamed of himself.
Even the fictional characters in the (TV) show “Mayor of Kingstown” understood that you don’t tear down the basketball hoops.
Our “leadership” needs to get their heads on straight.
Rebuild the town gazebo on the Green now. I’d be happy to lend a hand in its construction.
