I agree with the contributor in the April 3 edition that “Ignorance can be educated, crazy can be medicated, but there is no cure for stupid.”
Also I agree that it is prudent to learn from history as after World War II, Russia’s ambitions were to expand its communist ideals beyond its borders. Thus in 1948, President Truman helped to form NATO to deter Russia’s communist intimidation and expansion.
I remember those Cold War era worries as a kid in school when we had air raid drills and had to hide under our desks in the event of a nuclear attack. These drills were made more intense in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis and fortunately JFK had the missiles sent back to communist Russia.
I remember the Cold War from the American experience of the worry of a nuclear attack by communist Russia, and I’m sure that (Vladimir) Putin, one year younger than me, remembers his memories of their fears of possible American attacks.
I believe in America’s goal of freedom for all, but Putin believes in communist Russia’s control and desire to continue its influence around the world. Putin (a former KGB officer) is now on his mission to reconstitute the old Soviet Union, which collapsed in 1991.
Putin had started his mission with the invasion of Ukraine. If that succeeds, the next step will be to attack a NATO country that he believes was part of the old Russia that will engage NATO countries not only in a proxy war but with combat troops.
How many of us want to send our soldiers to another war? It can be stopped now in Ukraine. They just need the resources, not the boots on the ground.
The longer it takes for help to arrive in Ukraine, the sooner we’ll have to send boots on the ground and communist Putin reaches his goal.
Republicans in Congress must understand the need for the resources now for Ukraine to fend off communism.
Let’s not be stupid and let communist Putin succeed in Ukraine. We must support Ukraine and stop the war now and help to cure stupidity.
