Wrestling captains called good role models
NEWTON. Mason Bucci, Keegan Murtagh and Aaron Stone have winning records.
Selecting captains for the Newton High School wrestling team was fairly easy this year, head coach Eric Bollette said.
Juniors Mason Bucci, Keegan Murtagh and Aaron Stone “have been starters since freshman year and are the hardest-working student athletes in the room.’’
“They set the pace for the team and are good role models,” he said.
As the post-season tournaments approach, Murtaugh, Stone and Bucci appear to be competing at the best of their abilities on the mat.
“All three of them have winning records and have led our team at both dual meets and individual tournaments,’’ Bollette said. “They continue to work to improve themselves and those around them.’’
The coaches are impressed with how the three leaders help guide their teammates in positive ways during practice and matches.
“These three young men consistently push the pace in practice and work to improve not only themselves but those around them,’’ Bollette said.
Through Friday, Jan. 26, the Braves’ record is 4-9. They are at the bottom of the Freedom Division of the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference.
Several wrestlers have made their presence felt this winter.
“Our team has had contributions from all starters, particularly (sophomore) Tyler Morodan, (freshman) Tim McNamara, (freshman) Sean Brown and (senior) Joey Catalano,’’ the coach said.
On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Braves are scheduled to participate in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) District 4 Tournament along with DePaul, High Point, North Warren, Kittatinny, Vernon, Sparta, West Milford and Wallkill Valley.
The tournament will be held at High Point.
All three of them (team captains) have winning records and have led our team at both dual meets and individual tournaments. They continue to work to improve themselves and those around them.’’
