Local athlertes in college sports

— Ryan Brewster (Newton High School) and Blake DiGiaimo (Kittatinny High School) were members of the Stockton University (Galloway, NJ) men’s outdoor track and field program this spring. DiGiaimo is a senior distance runner for Stockton. Brewster, a senior competitor in multiple events placed third in the decathlon at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Outdoor Championships held in Ewing.
The Ospreys placed second in the team scoring at the NJAC Outdoor Championships. DiGiaimo, listed as a Criminal Justice major earned a place on the NJAC All Academic Honorable Mention team.
Let’s take a glance at other local student athletes who competed in collegiate sports this past spring season. This is the second installation in the series:
Jennifer Smalley (Kittatinny High School) was a sophomore defender for the King’s College (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) women’s lacrosse team this past season. Smalley started in all 18 games this year for King’s. She earned a place on the Metro Atlantic Conference (MAC) Spring Academic Honor Roll as a Secondary Education/English major.
The Monarchs tallied an overall record of 7-11 with a 5-3 mark on their home field. They had a 4-3 record in the MAC Freedom Division. King’s advanced to the MAC Freedom Tournament semifinal round where they were defeated by Misericordia University in a game played in Dallas, Pa.
Tom Armstrong (Lenape Valley High School) was a sophomore first baseman for the Elizabethtown College (Pa.) baseball squad this year. Armstrong is listed as a Business Administration major for Elizabethtown.
The Blue Jays posted an overall record of 21-19 with a mark of 8-6 at home. In the Landmark Conference, they went 12-6. They advanced to the Landmark Conference Baseball Championship where they went 1-2 with a victory over Moravian and losses to Scranton and Catholic.
Jordan Lorenzo (Kittatinny High School) was a junior competitor in jumps for the Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ campus) men’s track and field team this year. Lorenzo finished in fourth place in the high jump at the Outdoor Metropolitan Championship meet.
The Scarlet Knights captured the team crown at the Outdoor Metropolitan Championship meet.
Nick Pastor Poe, a graduate of Kittatinny High School was a senior on the roster of the William Paterson University (Wayne, NJ) men’s golf team this past season. Pastor Poe, listed as a Communications major had a low round of 90 for William Paterson.
The Pioneers placed third as a team at the Drew Ranger Spring Brook Invitational at Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown, NJ.
Kevin Costabel (Newton High School) was a junior who competed in multiple events for the East Stroudsburg University (Pa.) men’s outdoor track and field team this spring. East Stroudsburg finished in third place in the team scoring at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships held in Slippery Rock, Pa.
