Lenape Valley grad wins championship
SUSSEX COUNTY. Danny Haws, a sophomore wrestler for Centenary University, is among local student athletes gaining notice in collegiate sports.
Several local student athletes are gaining notice in collegiate sports this season:
• Danny Haws, a graduate of Lenape Valley Regional High School, is a sophomore competitor in the 133-pound weight class for the wrestling team at Centenary University in Hackettstown.
He captured an individual championship at the Bob Quade Cyclone Open last month. Centenary hosted the tournament.
The Cyclones are scheduled to participate in the Virginia Duals in Hampton on Friday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 13.
Haws is listed as a communications major.
• Maddie Beyer, a graduate of Kittatinny Regional High School, is a sophomore guard for the women’s basketball team at Drew University in Madison.
She played in 10 of the first 11 regular-season games and started in seven of them. She had 17 assists, 13 steals, 18 rebounds and made nine three-point baskets.
The Rangers had four victories in 2023. On Saturday, Jan. 20m they are scheduled to host Goucher College in a Landmark Conference contest.
Beyer is listed as a psychology major.
• Kevin McNicholas, a Kittatinny graduate, is a junior guard for the basketball team at William Paterson University in Wayne.
He played in seven of the first 13 regular-season games.
The Pioneers had six overall wins in 2023, with a mark of 3-3 on their home court.
On Wednesday, Jan. 24, they are slated to host New Jersey City University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest.
McNicholas is listed as an exercise science major.
• Billy Ruddy, a Kittatinny graduate, is a sophomore who competes in freestyle and breaststroke events for the swimming and diving team at Rider University in Lawrenceville.
He was a member of the 200 medley relay team that placed first in a dual meet victory over Mount Saint Mary’s last month.
The Broncs had an overall record of 4-2 in 2023, with a mark of 2-1 at home and a 2-1 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Rider is scheduled to compete in the MAAC Championships from Feb. 14 through Feb. 17 in Geneva, Ohio.
• Steve Dalling, a Kittatinny graduate, is a sophomore who competes in the 165-pound weight class for the wrestling team at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken.
He had three wins in matches.
The Ducks had an overall dual meet record of 4-2 in 2023 and they were 2-0 on their home mat.
They are scheduled to take part in the Budd Whitehill Duals in Williamsport, Pa., on Friday, Jan 12 and Saturday, Jan. 13.
Dalling is listed as an engineering major.
