— Bergen Catholic High School (Oradell, N.J.) defeated Pope John XXIII Regional High School in varsity football on Saturday, October 22. The final score was 14-7. The game took place at Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta Township.
Quarterback Johnny Langan scored both touchdowns for Bergen Catholic. The first touchdown in the second quarter along with the extra point kick allowed Bergen to lead the game 7-0 going into halftime.
Pope John did not light up the score board until the third quarter, when quarterback Ty Hranicka threw an 11-yard TD pass to receiver Jason Miller to tie the game.
After the Bergen Catholic Crusaders second touchdown the Pope John Lions had a chance to get even on the scoreboard. A bad punt by the Crusaders gave good field possession to the Lions with less than two minutes to play. But Bergen's defense held steady stalling Pope John's drive in three downs. Pope John faced fourth-and-4 on the 40 yard line.
In the last play of the contest the Bergen defense poured on the pressure and linebacker Shqipron Idrizi intercepted a Pope John pass sealing the win.
