Newton Holiday Parade
"Are you ready for a parade?" Newton's Town Crier, William Joseph, asked the eager crowd on Spring Street at the start of the Newton Holiday Parade on Saturday, Nov. 26. A chorus of cheers echoed in reply, as the parade headed down Spring Street and rounded the corner onto Moran Street. Saturday's temperatures reached 64 degrees, and some parade attendees sported shorts. Despite the mild weather a festive feeling prevailed with the help of a Toyland theme chosen by the parade organizers, the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce. Dignitaries, businesses and organizations were well-represented at the event. In addition to beauty queens, bands and fire departments there was a special tap dance number by the students of the D'Marge Dance Studio. The grande finale was a visit from Old Saint Nick himself, who rode in atop Newton Fire Department's Tower Truck 804. Children lined up to sit on Santa's lap at the end of the parade, as the Newton High School and Kittatinny Regional High School Marching Bands ended the festivities with a concert. Mark your calendars for the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce's community caroling event on Friday, Dec. 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Carolers will meet in the square, walk and sing from the gazebo, then along Spring Street, and finish with refreshments at the Fire Museum.
