NEWTON — Each March, schools in NJ celebrate the observance of Youth Art Month (YAM). The primary goal of YAM is to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. Art work created by students in grades K through 12 from Sussex County’s public and private schools will be on display at the Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council, 133 Spring Street in Newton from March 17 to 29. Students and their families are invited to attend the artists’ reception on March 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. for Grade K through 6 students and March 29 from 6 to 7 p.m. for Grade 7 through 12 students. This exhibit, which is sponsored by Art Educators of NJ and Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council, is coordinated under the direction of Beth Delaney, Sussex County YAM Chairperson, Fredon Township School, Newton and Sara O’Neill, Sussex County YAM Co-Chairperson, Valley Road School, Stanhope. Six pieces of artwork are selected from this entire exhibit and sent to the Art Educators of NJ 2012 Youth Art Month State Exhibit, March 23 through 30 at the Trenton Statehouse. The six students whose work is moving forward are Sabrina Sharafi of Merriam Avenue School, Kyla Richards of Frankford Township School, Mya Randall of Immaculate Conception Regional School, Amanda Friesen of Sparta Alpine School, Braxton Ham of Halsted Middle School and Conor O’Leary of High Point Regional High School.
