Teen killed in prom weekend crash
A Prom weekend crash killed Newton High School junior Alexis Faye, 17, officials said.
“She was the type of kid who got along with everybody,” Newton High School Principal Jeff Waldron said Wednesday. “She was a friend to everybody. She looked past the exterior and found the good in everyone she met.”
According to New Jersey State Police Spokesman Sgt. Jeff Flynn, Faye was a passenger with three other people in a 2017 Mercedes-Benz sedan traveling on Greendale Road, also known as Route 611, in Fredon Township at 5:37 p.m. when the vehicle went off the road and overturned.
Flynn said Faye died at the scene, while the driver, identified as Anthony Burke, 17, and passenger Maria Fiore, 16, were airlifted to Morristown Medical Center with serious injuries.
The final passenger, Nicholas Chavarria, 17, was also taken to that hospital with minor injuries, Flynn said.
Police have not filed any charges in the crash at this time, he said.
In her obituary, Faye was remembered as a “flourishing junior” at Newton High School where she was the statistician for the boys’ lacrosse team, and was working on starting a girls’ team in the school.
“She was passionate about lacrosse,” Waldron said. “She approached the athletic director about expanding the (lacrosse) program.”
She also volunteered as a counselor at the Redeemer Lutheran Bible Camp and also worked at Tranquility Farms in Green Township, her obituary said.
Prior to living in Newton, she briefly lived in West Milford.
Waldron said her mother, Joan, has been a member of the Newton board for many years.
A candlelight vigil for “Lexi” was scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday night at the high school football field, Waldron said.
A funeral mass was scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, located at 22 Halsted Street in Newton.
