Newton - Injuries and illness affect the body in a myriad of ways, and each healing process is notably different. Some are long; some are easy. Many require physical therapy to help restore movement functions to the body.
If supporting people through their healing process sounds interesting, becoming a Physical Therapy Aide may be the key to a new healthcare career. Sussex County Community College offers a comprehensive, 70-hour Physical Therapy Aide program to prepare students for this growing field. A new session starts in February.
Physical therapy restores loco-motor function to the human body by alleviating and correcting movement dysfunction. It has become a valuable part of total patient care and rehabilitation. Physical Therapy Aides, under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, assist with specific components of treatment intervention.
As the general population becomes more physically active, so does the need for physical therapy professionals. Physical Therapy Aides can work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, home care agencies, sports medicine clinics, and more.
The Physical Therapy Aide program at SCCC will prepare students for entry-level positions or a longer-term course of study. It will prepare students to carry out the non-technical duties of physical therapy, such as preparing treatment areas, ordering supplies and devices, and transporting patients.
The Curriculum includes study of circulatory disorders, types of physical therapy modalities, common anatomical injuries, strengthening, stretching, and exercise, as well as how to measure vital signs and safely transport patients.
The program does not include a national or state certification.
The Physical Therapy Aide Program runs Saturdays from Feb. 23-June 8 (Deadline for registration is February 14). Classes will be held from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
