BYRAM — Private Michael O’Brien, 18, graduated from the United States Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, SC, on Oct. 16. Private O'Brien successfully completed 13 weeks of training as a recruit in Platoon 1086. He earned a tan belt in martial arts and qualified as a rifleman sharpshooter.

While at boot camp, O'Brien and his fellow platoon members underwent a variety of physical training: martial arts, close combat skills, bayonet fighting, endurance courses, weapons field training, water survival qualifications, and rifle qualifications. In the classroom, studies included first aid, Marine Corps history, terrorism awareness, USMC leadership, ethics, the Uniform Code of Military Justice and other crucial skills required to earn the title of U.S. Marine.

Following 10 days on leave and further infantry training at Camp Geiger, O'Brien will begin his studies in avionics, his chosen career in the Marines.

A 2015 graduate of Sussex Tech, where he studied electronics all four years, Michael is the son of Sonny and Jessica O’Brien of Cranberry Lake.
