New STEM program at Sussex County Charter School

Sussex County Charter School for Technology, in Sparta, started the 2016-2017 school year with a brand new, full time STEM program for all of its students. Led by Dr. Michael Schwartz, previous STEM Director at Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, NJ, the team includes STEM, Science and Math teachers. The program is one period, five days a week, for all grade and prides itself on the integration of all of these disciplines.
Deirdre Mastandrea, principal of Sussex Charter School since September 2015, said that STEM is just one example of the ways the school is reaching children, and also pointed to the new flexible seating model the school launched in September as well. “In the real world, people have to be able to think for themselves, work in groups, and share ideas," she said. "That’s what our students are doing every day at Sussex Charter.”
Mastandrea is clearly passionate about what she does and she wants to share that with the community. “I’d love for people all over the county to feel the passion that I feel and that our teachers feel about what we are doing here. In the world of education, this is a very exciting place to be right now,” she said.
Mastandrea urges parents and children who are curious about Sussex Charter to attend their open house on November 6, 2016, starting at 2 pm. For information, call 973-383-3250 or email Mrs. Mastandrea at dmastandrea@sussexcharter.org.
