- Lessen the load on your key chain. Sparta Public Library just made it easier for all of us. No need to scramble for your library card, just flash your phone next time.
In May the library introduced patrons to the Sparta Library App, a mobile library card, a new and easy way to access all of the services. The app, compatible with all Apple and Android devices, is both an extension and alternative to the library’s already user-friendly website.
“We thought it was a very good way to integrate our technology into one place. The app is a natural progression,” said Dave Costa, system administrator for the Sparta Public Library.
In the works for the past year, Director Carol Boutilier and Costa worked with a company that custom-developed the app to meet the needs of the library. It can be downloaded easily by searching ‘Sparta Library’ in the Apple or Android app store. To connect, users register one time only with their library card number.
Somerset County Library is one of the only libraries in New Jersey to also use an app, said Costa.
“We looked at their app and really liked it. And so we had confidence in the company,” Costa said. “It’s really cutting edge and supports our mobile website.”
The app is multi-functional and serves as a digital library card that can be used for searching materials, reserving and renewing items and self-checkout thereby managing accounts overall.
“We really think it’s worth it because of the convenience factor. You can utilize the library through this one device,” he said.
And the app links to all of the electronic services offered such as Hoopla, I Cloud Library and Freegal that feature downloadable books, music, movies and audio books.
“Audio books is a huge category and very popular. This service makes it much easier –you don’t need CD’s,” said Costa. “From your phone or tablet, the audio book can go right to your Bluetooth in the car.”
Costa points out that the app is an option that doesn’t interfere with existing services. People can still go directly to I Cloud Library to download a book. The app also works with Nook and Kindle Fire.
Renewing a book just got easier with the Sparta Library app by lining up the camera of a device (phone or tablet) with the barcode of a book. In addition, as soon as app users walk into the library they will be notified of their account status and events via a push notification created through Bluetooth technology that the library installed.
“Now people have easy access to register for events through the app too,” said Costa.
After fixing some very minor kinks, the app is operating well and being used by many members. The library is continuing to promote it through emails and other including a raffle drawing on Sept.28 to win an Amazon Echo.
“It’s always a challenge to let people know what we are doing. Simply show us at the circulation desk that you got the app and you are entered into the raffle to win.”
Costa is excited about the app and welcomes any questions or feedback from library patrons.
“It is appealing to all ages, and we are promoting it to everyone. We have had rave reviews and are very happy with the reception it’s gotten.”
