Local teen wins Global Citizen fellowship

In August 2019, recent Sussex Tech graduate Sadie Price-Elliott will travel to a community in Ecuador where she will spend eight months helping with international development projects.
Sadie received a fellowship from Global Citizen Year. The social enterprise organization is committed to training a new generation of social change leaders through a school-year long gap year immersion focused on service learning and leadership development. Similar to the Peace Corps, Global Citizen Year provides fellows with the opportunity to live abroad, develop global consciousness, and make a difference in the world.
Price-Elliott went through a selective application and interview process in order to earn a Global Citizen Year fellowship. Following a week-long leadership training at Stanford University, she will travel to Ecuador with approximately 60 other Ecuador fellows. Said Price-Elliott in a statement: “I will apprentice (intern) at an organization, hopefully focused on environmental conservation or education, and live with a host family. I will use my fellowship to gain a global perspective, learn about the complexities of social change, and develop the grit that I will need to approach my future work with empathy and perseverance.”
A Global Citizen Year made perfect sense for Price-Elliott, who plans to study International Development at Clark University upon returning to the U.S. “I started writing for a NYC-based newspaper called IndyKids when I was twelve and my journalism played a profound role in the choosing of a career path,” Price-Elliott said. “It opened my eyes to many environmental and social issues which I would now like to spend my life working to address.”
Price-Elliott will keep a blog during her time as a Global Citizen Year Fellow to document and share her experience. Additionally, Price-Elliott is responsible for raising $2,500 for the Global Citizen Year Fellow fund which will provide financial aid to future fellows and enable promising young leaders from a diverse set of backgrounds to partake.
