Local pastor offers Irish melodies

SPARTA – "Come by the hills, to the land where life is a song," local pastor Father David McDonnell invites listeners on the first track of Memories Linger On, a collection of Irish folk music released this past November to benefit charitable causes.
It's an apt introduction to an album filled with rich storytelling, reflecting not just Irish culture but also human nature.
Father McDonnell, who has been the pastor at Our Lady of the Lake Parish for the past eight years, was born and raised in Ireland, and attended seminary school in Tipperary. His family was musically talented on both sides, singing and playing instruments such as the fiddle and accordion.
"There was always music at home," said McDonnell, recalling in particular the traditional Irish folk songs sung by his mother. "From her, I think I gained a love of music."
It was his parishioners who urged McDonnell to pursue that love, leading to the creation of his first album, a Christmas-themed collection entitled A Child Is Born, in 2015.
"He has such a gift, and he always encourages us to use our own gifts," said parishioner Linda O'Connell, a musician and Irish citizen herself. "Now he's sharing his God-given talent to help people."
O'Connell was the producer of A Child Is Born, and played keyboard, synth, and high whistle for Memories Linger On, as well as providing vocals.
This latest album features covers of both traditional and contemporary Irish songs, with a secular tracklist of fifteen songs that span from melancholy tales of displacement to warm celebrations of love.
"Irish music has the ability to tell stories," said McDonnell, and the songs on this album do just that. In "Isle of Hope," for example, McDonnell's gentle voice guides listeners through the story of Annie Moore, the first immigrant to pass through Ellis Island. The album is a clear reflection of Ireland's unique history, but it also explores themes familiar to people of all nations: hardship, loss, love, and hope for the future.
"I chose songs that meant something to me," McDonnell, who immigrated to the United States himself, explained. The effort was a collaboration between McDonnell and several professional musicians – including John Walsh, a noted guitarist, who also provided the studio where the album was recorded. The entire process took approximately two months.
"It was enjoyable just getting together, and being with so many talented musicians," McDonnell said.
Aside from production costs, all of the proceeds from the CDs go to charity. A Child Is Born raised over eight thousand dollars, and Memories Linger On has now raised nearly the same amount – in fact, it sold out during its first run. All funds are distributed to local charities, such as the Ecumenical Food Pantry and Knights of Columbus, as well as to Our Lady of the Lake's twin parish in Haiti.
"It's a joy to be able to give money to people who are struggling," McDonnell said. "It's amazing what each one of us can do with whatever gifts we have."
As for plans for future musical endeavors, Father McDonnell said he has considered recording a collection of hymns of inspiration.
"People like to listen to songs that are inspiring or helpful," he said, smiling. "There are so many beautiful songs."
Anyone wishing to purchase Memories Linger On can do so by contacting Our Lady of the Lake's main office, at 973-729-6107. The CDs are priced at $15 each.
