Lady Patriot player scores 1,000 point

STANHOPE — Lenape Valley senior Lindsay Sabo scored her 1,000 point on Saturday, Feb. 2 in the game against Warren Hills.
She is the third female basketball player to achieve this milestone at the regional high school in Stanhope.
At a height of only 5’4” this could be considered quite remarkable for the spunky 18-year old point guard, typically sporting a blue-ribboned ponytail.
However, according to Lenape Coach Kat Boger, this is not the case. It has been one of Sabo’s objectives since she joined the team four years ago.
“By the end of last season, we knew that it would be a great possibility for her to do this, this year,” said Boger.
Sabo said it felt awesome to meet her goal. Basketball has been a major part of her life. It’s also an activity she has enjoyed before she can remember.
“My Dad told me I picked up a basketball at two years old,” said Sabo, and she hasn’t stopped playing. “I think I started playing rec by third grade, and then travel, CYO, and AAU.”
Sabo said she really loves the game. “It keeps me busy too.” Sabo also plays soccer in the fall to have fun and stay in shape.
When asked if she is a fan of any female college or pro teams, she replied with a giggle, “No, I don’t really watch basketball. It’s kinda weird.”
Sabo said she doesn’t have the time to watch television like many teens her age. During the season she isn’t home most evenings until 9 p.m., and she still has to manage her studies.
Starting Feb. 25 the team goes to States.
This is a one-game elimination tournament played on the home court. Once that’s done, Sabo plans to enjoy the rest of the school year with her friends before graduation.
“I will miss my whole team,” said Sabo, but more so her coach who she affectionately calls McPhail (Boger’s maiden name).
Sabo hopes to play Division 3 basketball next year. “I’ve been emailing with the coach from Castleton [University] in Vermont.”
An award ceremony for Sabo was held at Lenape on Feb. 7 before the ladies added another win against Hopatcong (54-45) to their season.
