SPARTA — Designated by executive order by President Richard Nixon in 1974, National Volunteer Week, is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. Since 1974, the volunteer movement has grown exponentially each subsequent year, with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week. With the third year anniversary of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, the creation of the Volunteer Generation Fund and the resonant call to serve from the President, this year should be energizing and inspiring. Pass It Along encourages individuals and organizations in the local communities of Sussex, Warren and Northern Morris County to take action and be at the center of social change thereby discovering and actively demonstrating their collective power to foster positive transformation. Serv-A-Thon Volunteer opportunities are available at Pass It Along's 10th annual Serve-A-Thon on Saturday May 12. Individuals, families, and groups will participate in a wide array of community service projects scheduled throughout the day from gardening, landscaping, painting, cooking and more. Also, a Mini Serve-A-Thon with service projects for families with children ages 3 to 12 years is available. C elebration kickoff begins Friday, May 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Station Park in Sparta where volunteers sign in, meet other volunteers, and receive t-shirts and all project details.
