FREDON — The Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice in Fredon was recently honored with a 2015 New Good Neighbor Award from the New Jersey Business and Industry Association and New Jersey Business magazine. NJBIA President and CEO Michele Siekerka and NJBIA Board Chairman Matt Wright presented the award to architect Frank Warr principal of HQW Architects LLC and Julia Quinlan, co-founder and chairman of the board, Karen Ann Quinlan Memorial Foundation and the Karen Ann Quinlan Charitable Foundation, at the 55 Annual New Good Neighbor Awards luncheon on June 5.
“Today’s winners have contributed to their communities by investing in them financially and creating jobs, providing valuable services to underserved communities and returning empty and unusable properties to productive business activity,” said Siekerka. “The people of New Jersey have all benefited from the hard work, vision and commitment of the people who brought these developments to fruition.”
The opening of the Karen Ann Quinlan Home has fulfilled a decades-long dream of Julia Quinlan, who lost her daughter Karen in 1985 when she was only 21 years old. The home provides quality and compassionate care in a comfortable setting for those who are on their final life journey.
The $4.8 million home sits on nine pristine acres with breath-taking views of Water Wheel Farm and the Kittatinny mountains. Both inside and out, the Karen Ann Quinlan Home immerses patients and their families in a comfortable, homey atmosphere. Rooms include accommodations for patient’s loved ones, and guests can enjoy the comforts of a home-like kitchen and dining area.
The idea of close ties even played into the construction of the building. Local firms were used for the architecture, contracting and financing to involve the community in the creation of the home.
The project was designed by HQW Architects LLC of Newton. The primary builder was TM Brennan Contractors of Hamburg. Tammie Horsfield, President of Sussex County Chamber of Commerce, nominated the project.
Presented jointly by NJBIA and New Jersey Business magazine, the New Good Neighbor Awards annually recognize the best and most exciting renovations, expansions and new developments in the state. Winners are chosen based on economic benefit and job creation, architectural merit and community involvement.
Thirty-one development projects were nominated for New Good Neighbor Awards this year, comprising more than $391 billion in development investments and which created nearly 5,000 jobs. An independent panel of judges selected the winners.
With 20,000 members, NJBIA is the nation’s largest state-level employers association. New Jersey Business magazine is NJBIA’s flagship publication.
