Forecast forces school closures

    Andover Regional Schools, as well as Newton, Stanhope, Byram Township, and Sparta Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, due to the weather forecast. Public schools are not the only ones closing. Some private schools have also announced closures, as did Pope John XXIII Regional in Sparta. For further specifics on closures, check with private school or public school district's web site.
    The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecast snow that will create "hazardous travel conditions," with the morning commute especially impacted, and "with effects lingering into the evening." NWS also advises 4-8" of snow are possible for Northwestern New Jersey, including the Sparta, Andover, Newton, Byram, and Stanhope area, with power outages possible.
    New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has declared a State of Emergency for all of New Jersey, effective midnight, tonight. The state's Office of Emergency Management has been activated. State offices have a two-hour delayed opening on Tuesday, Feb. 12, for non-essential personnel, but essential employees must report to work at their regularly scheduled time.
    The New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Department of Transportation advise travelers to take caution and to stay off the roads, if possible.
