Byram Police Department Holds Awards Ceremony
BYRAM — At the Township Council Meeting of July 16 the Byram Township Police Department honored several of its officers and welcomed a new one to its ranks.
Deputy Mayor Marie Raffay administered the police department oath to Patrolman Lawrence Mendelsohn, as his family and Police Chief Ray Rafferty stood with him.
Mendelsohn graduated from Morris Knolls High School and served four years in the Marine Corps after that.
He served as a Sheriff’s Officer in the Morris County Sheriff’s Department from 2005 until July 2013, when he joined the Byram Police Department. He was a member of the Morris County SWAT team and chemical, biological, and nuclear response team and has received extensive training in these fields.
Patrolman Daniel DeWald was honored with two Honorable Service Awards for two separate incidents, one of which involved the apprehension of an armed robbery suspect.
Also honored with Honorable Service Awards were Patrolmen Victor Marin and Brian Moreland.
Patrolman Robert Schelhammer received a Five-Year Good Conduct Award and an Educational Achievement Award in recognition of his earning an Associate’s Degree.
Sergeant Guy Mariani received the Meritorious Service Medal, an Honorable Service Award, and an Educational Achievement Award in recognition of earning a Master’s Degree.
