Joanne Sorrentino, Esq., has been practicing for over 35 years and opened the Law Office of Joanne Sorrentino, Esq., LLC, in 2015. She is an expert in a number of areas of the law with a concentration on real estate. Her tenacity and thoroughness set her apart. She always checks the Highlands Act to look into well and septic records. She also checks for Open Public Records Act to make sure there are no violations. She does title searches and checks with the tax collector.
Sorrentino also looks into whether there is a dam assessment on the property.
“There can be dam assessments people may not know about and then suddenly its enforced and unexpected money is owed,” Sorrentino said.
She also looks into whether there are lake association dues and other home owners costs and insists that her clients get a survey.
“It's not required, but I feel it's of the utmost importance,” Sorrentino said.
She remembers a case where the client was under the assumption that he/she had a full square of property. When the survey was done, it was only one of two diagonal halves.
Sorrentino holds a fifth-degree black belt in Goshin Ryu Karate from Pace Institute of Karate. She extrapolates the discipline needed for martial arts into her practice, to uncover every piece of evidence and every caveat in each case she takes on.
Sorrentino graduated from Fordham University at Lincoln Center as a double major with a bachelors degree in psychology and theater arts. She obtained her Juris Doctorate from Washburn University School of Law and served as Judicial Clerk to the Honorable Adolph Romei and the Honorable Joseph N. Donatelli. Sorrentino was an Adjunct Professor at Berkeley College in the Paralegal Studies Program, instructing several courses including Business Law, Family Law, Legal Writing, Wills and Estates, and Real Property.
During her career, Sorrentino had the privilege of arguing before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals where she successfully argued the case of Gibbs v. Carnival Cruise. She was also successful in Cummings v. The Money Store, a U.S. Federal District Court Bankruptcy case. In addition, Sorrentino has practiced in many areas of the law, including guardianship, land use, residential and commercial real estate, bankruptcy, family law, personal injury, insurance defense, insurance fraud, discrimination claims, general litigation, wills and estates, commercial transactions, business formation and school law.
She is a current member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Sussex County Bar Association, is a member of the Shongum Sportsmen’s Association, and is on the Executive Board of Mountaintop Church in Budd Lake, New Jersey.
Though Sorrentino has worked for large firms, she prefers being a sole practitioner.
“When you call me, you get me: not a paralegal,” she said. “Often times, with a large firm, you never speak to the attorney but go through an intern. Clients have asked me, 'what were you doing up at 3 a.m. to return my e-mail?' I say, 'that's just how I operate, I'm always on the job.'”
In guardianship cases, Sorrentino works with the Morris County or Sussex county surrogate and talks to doctors to ensure capacity or lack of capacity by the caregiver.
“It's so important to get every side of the story,” she said.
Sorrentino is always accessible to her clients, and that's one of the things that sets her apart. Even if she's on vacation, she checks in daily. She uncovers every stone to make sure each client gets the deserved outcome.
For legal matters concerning commercial and residential real estate, Business Formation and Transactions or Wills, Trusts, Gardianship or Elder Law, Sorrentino is on the case.
“The resolution of your legal matter requires experience, knowledge and care,” she said. “I am committed to your legal needs and goals. At The Law Office of Joanne Sorrentino, you are treated as a person, not a number. With over 30 years experience, The Law Office of Joanne Sorrentino provides a wide range of legal services.”
