Bears attack dogs in 2 incidents
SPARTA. Police urge residents to exercise caution when outside and to secure garbage and food sources that may attract wildlife.
The Sparta Township Police Department on Wednesday, May 15 warned residents about bears after dogs were attacked in two separate incidents near West Mountain Road in the past two weeks.
On Thursday, May 9, a bear attacked a resident’s dogs on Graphic Boulevard.
On Monday, May 13, another encounter occurred on Mountain Spring Drive.
One dog died and another one was injured.
Both incidents are being investigated by Sparta police and officials of New Jersey Fish and Wildlife.
Residents near West Mountain Road are advised to exercise caution when outside and to secure garbage and food sources that may attract wildlife.
Anyone witnessing an aggressive bear or encountering aggressive wildlife is urged to contact the police immediately ay 973-729-6121.
“The Sparta Township Police Department will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary. We appreciate the community’s cooperation and vigilance during this time,” said Chief Jeffery McCarrick.
