Learn about native plants, then help with removal

Byram. Learn more about invasive plants and then put that knowledge into action by helping remove invasive plants on Saturday, Oct. 19, in Byram Township.

    Did you know that New Jersey is home to approximately 2,000 native plants? Many of these native plants play an important role in retaining a healthy ecosystem, but native plants are being threatened by the introduction and subsequent spreading of non-native invasive plants. Help protect the ecosystem by not planting these non native, invasive plants and by removing existing invasive plants. Learn more about it from Byram Township’s Environmental Commission at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Byram Township Municipal Building.

    Michael Van Clef, Director of NJ Invasive Species Strike Team Taskforce will give a presentation on invasives. Volunteers afterward to help remove invasives on Tamarack Park Trail. Volunteers are requested to bring their own hand loppers/pruning shears (no power tools permitted), gloves, tick spray, sun protection and water.

    Volunteers should meet Environmental Commission members at the C.O. Johnson parking lot by the soccer field at approximately 10 a.m.. Participants are invited to join us for the presentation and/or removing the barberry on the trail. This event is rain or shine. RSVP to dfett@byramtwp.org.
