Musical Legend The Kingston Trio will perform their timeless tunes at the Newton Theatre on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 3 p.m.

In 1957, The Kingston Trio emerged from San Francisco’s North Beach club scene to take the country by storm, bringing the rich tradition of American folk music into the mainstream for the first time. During the late 50s and early 60s, the Trio enjoyed unprecedented record sales and worldwide fame, while influencing the musical tastes of a generation.

The Kingston Trio of today, Bill Zorn, George Grove and Rick Dougherty, are continuing the Kingston Trio legacy.

“There is a tremendous demand for our type of acoustic music, and not just from those who remember The Kingston Trio. All people want is for us to sing a song, tell a story, and make it good.”

Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard formed the original Kingston Trio while the three were attending college in the San Francisco area. Using only acoustic guitars and banjos, and singing simple yet memorable melodies, they reawakened America to its own rich folk music heritage.

The Kingston Trio was the number one vocal group in the world, a musical and cultural phenomenon whose record sales and concert draws were matched only by The Beatles. In a feat yet to be surpassed, Billboard magazine listed four Kingston Trio albums in their Top 10 at the same time. The group has also won two Grammy awards and numerous gold records.

The Kingston Trio, with their trademark three-part harmony and clean, crisp sound, is a phenomenon unmatched by any other. They have appeared on countless variety shows and performed at some of the most famous venues in the country, including Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. Some of their instantly recognizable hits include Tom Dooley, MTA, Scotch and Soda and Tijuana Jail.

Over 40 years after the song, "Tom Dooley" shot to the top of the charts, the Trio is still on the road 30 weeks out of the year, bringing back all the great memories and making new ones.

Tickets for Kingston Trio are $49 for premium seating, $44 for orchestra and $39.00 for balcony. Purchase tickets by visiting www.thenewtontheatre.com or contact the box office at 973-383-3700.
