— Newton Medical Center has opened the Advanced Care Unit, a new unit designed to provide a more comfortable environment for patients and families when additional care is needed to monitor and determine the best course of treatment, according to a company news release.

The Advanced Care Unit (ACU), a block of 12 private hospital rooms adjacent to the emergency department, is available for adult and pediatric patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The new unit provides an added level of care and attention for patients experiencing a number of health-related issues. Patients can go to the ACU directly from the emergency department, or they can be referred by their community physicians.

"The Advanced Care Unit provides a new setting in which we can better assess our patients' needs and coordinate the care and services that will return them to health," said Joe DiPaolo, president of Newton Medical Center, and vice president of the hospital's parent organization, Atlantic Health System.

The 4,180 square foot ACU reflects the evolution of how pediatric health care is being delivered throughout the country, the majority of pediatric cases is either handled at pediatrician offices, or involves acute conditions that bring patients to the hospital via the emergency department.

In most cases, pediatric patients who come to the hospital often need shorter stays, but more attention than provided in an emergency setting.

Those patients who need specialty care can be sent to tertiary centers such as Goryeb Children's Hospital, which is also part of Atlantic Health System.

"The Advanced Care Unit reflects how we are tailoring our medical services to best serve the needs of our community," said Ardelle Bigos, chief nursing officer for Newton Medical Center. "This new unit will give children and families a special place where they can expect the highest level of care, at all times, day or night."

Nurses in the ACU have been cross-trained to care for adults and pediatrics, and the unit is also staffed by a pediatric specialist to care for children.

The ACU is designed to create a space that is patient and family-friendly, with six of its 12 beds designated for pediatric patients. The layout provides maximum staff visibility to the patient rooms with staff just a few steps from each patient. Each room is equipped with state-of-the-art telemonitoring technology for the highest quality care and safety, according to the release.

Upholstered banquette seating is provided in each room to allow parents a place to rest with their child overnight. The artwork, finishes and colors in the unit were selected to provide a distinctly non-clinical, relaxing atmosphere and to provide positive distractions for the pediatric patients and their families, as done in all Atlantic Health System facilities.

Additionally, children can order meals from a menu created specifically for them.

Newton Medical Center is inviting the community to tour the new unit and the many other centers, programs and services on its campus, for more information call 1-800-247-9580.
