NEWTON — Domestic Abuse & Sexual Assault Intervention Service, DASI, displayed society’s laundry on Newton Square Wednesday during sexual assault awareness month.
“This is called the clothesline project,” said DASI Sexual Assault Counselor Cassandra DeLucchi of Stillwater, pointing toward the clotheslines holding over 100 T-shirts. “These shirts are made by domestic violence survivors, sexual assault survivors, childhood sexual abuse survivors or significant others.”
Previously displayed only once a year at Sussex County Community College, the collection was also displayed on the Newton Green. “This is only the second time we have done it in the Green,” said DeLucchi. “We thought that maybe we could reach out to a larger population.”
Passersby could make a shirt to be displayed in the future. “We have more shirts, but we did not have enough space for the clothesline,” DeLucchi said.
DASI services
April is sexual assault awareness month. DASI provides services all year long. “We have an outreach center were we provide legal advocacy, domestic violence counseling, sexual assault counseling, a food pantry, we run domestic violence groups, sexual assault groups,” said DeLucchi. “We have a shelter for women and children and if there are male victims we can put them up in a hotel. We have a transitional house if some one needs more permanent type housing if they are in a dangerous situation.”
DASI victim services are free and confidential.
